I was just thinking of all the crazy stuff that Iaroslav's parents would have lived through. Stalin's famine (his mom would have been a peasant on one of the collective farms), WWII along the eastern front (Ukraine was occupied and a battleground, and his father was at Stalingrad. Come to think of it, it's possible both of them were soldiers, however unhappily), then the entire Cold War ...and raising Iaroslav, natch. :P

Depending on when they were born, they might've even lived through the 1921-22 famine as well. And of course Stalin's persecution in the 30's which must've affected everybody on some level.

I think the first line in the Ukrainian national anthem, "Ukraine is not dead yet", is pretty good considering that crazy history of theirs!

I have a Ben Franklin quote written in the front of my favorite Ukrainian history book "Happy that nation, fortunate that age, whose history is not diverting." The Chinese curse (it's English, but whatever) "May you live in interesting times" fits too.
I've never done the math on Slava's parents, but it's a real possibilty they were born shortly before or during the 20s famine.

I almost missed this update! D:

And this was such a tender moment. Just love seeing Iaroslav's parents, it makes him more real in a sense.

Thanks--that's how I intended it.

(Btw, you can see Iaroslav's father in his younger days here http://secondcrimeanwar.thecomicseries.com/comics/53/ back in the badly-drawn days of yore.)

Oh, Iaroslav is younger than I thought (comparing to the age of his parents.).
