Now if S stood for snow and N stood for nonsense, this page'd be three of four!

Hmm, John might have a bit of difficulty getting a job (I assume he's been listed as missing for a year and lost his job as a result). Putting down "volunteered for an anti-anti-Russian militia during a Ukrainian civil war" on a résumé is going to raise a lot of eyebrows, and having a gap of a year with no employment is equally going to come up in the interview.

On the other hand, since he was working in the American embassy in Moscow before he was kidnapped (if I understand #223 correctly), he might be able to get away with saying "cultural liaison to Crimea" and pretending certain details were classified.

I'm cautiously hopeful about his chances for the very reasons you mention -- it's far from ideal, but he's got that going for him (and he is supporting a group that the US is also officially supporting -- based on real US-Ukrainian relations of the mid-90s). He also doesn't seem to have come out of this with any crippling mental problems, and he IS a pretty skilled programmer and in my experience those tend to do well, especially in an economy as chipper as mid-90s America. It's going to be rough, but he'll probably come through ok. (Or maybe not! Maybe he winds up with a terrible job or as a alcoholic mercenary. Or both. Or a beatnik. We'll see him again and find out...)
